Which Type of Hair Removal is Best for You?

Do you have some pesky hair that you’re trying to get rid of?

Whether you want to get rid of a few errant strands or you’re going for the all-over bald look, you have more options than ever before when it comes to your new favorite type of hair removal.

Not all hair removal options are alike. Some of them are better for longer-term baldness while others are great for short and quick periods of hairlessness – but which is right for you?

Keep reading to learn all about the different ways for how to get rid of hair so you can choose the right one for your situation.

Shaving

Shaving is the easiest and most common hair removal method. Most people have shaved something or other at some point, whether it’s facial hair or body hair.

Shaving is cheap, quick, and affordable. You can buy packs of razors for several dollars. Aside from the occasional cut, shaving is safe and painless.

The downside of shaving is that hair grows back pretty quickly. There’s a myth that hair will grow back thicker if you shave it, but this isn’t true.

What actually happens is that the hair that grows back has a blunt end. This looks thicker than the tapered end that hair gets at its full length. Hair may also look darker because of the lack of sun exposure.

Plucking

Plucking is one of the least pleasant forms of hair removal, but it’s effective if you can stand the pain.

Plucking is most popular when it comes to removing small amounts of facial hair. Rogue eyebrow hairs, small mustache hairs, or the occasional mystery hairs that grow around your face are no match for a good pair of tweezers.

When you pluck a hair, you pull it from the root. This means that the new hair will grow back tapered and smooth.

Plucking is painful, though, and it isn’t suitable for hair removal on a large scale. It takes a long time and you’re unlikely to tolerate it. That said, it’s cheap, safe, and you can do it at home.

Hair Removal Cream

Hair removal cream isn’t as popular as it once was, but it’s a great option for anyone who wants a silky-smooth body post-hair removal.

When you use hair removal cream, you put a layer of cream over the part of your body that you want to remove hair from. For most people, this is the legs and arms.

After a few minutes, the cream burns through the hair so you can wipe it away with a damp cloth. It lasts for longer than shaving, but the hair will still grow back.

While hair removal cream is effective, it can also be risky. If you have sensitive skin or you don’t pay special attention to the instructions, you can end up with mild chemical burns.

You want to avoid using these creams in the bikini area or on the face as these places are the most likely to burn.

Waxing

Many people fear waxing. They’ve seen shows where people getting waxed are in extreme pain. In reality, it’s not that bad.

If you want to remove hair the quick and easy way, waxing is a great option. The hair will stay gone for a long time because the wax pulls it from the root. When it grows back, it will grow with a tapered end and it may look finer.

While waxing the entire body may not be the way to go (as it would take a lot of wax and it’s a painful hair removal method), waxing is great for the eyebrows, upper lip, chest, and bikini area.

There are some areas that you can wax on your own, but if you plan on a bikini wax, please see a professional.

Sugaring

Sugaring is one of the lesser-known hair removal methods.

It’s comparable to waxing, but it’s a great alternative that uses ingredients that you already know (and likely have in your pantry). This means that it’s a great DIY method (though it’s a good idea to go to a professional the first time, so you can see how to remove hair with this method).

The sugar mixture is gentle enough that it doesn’t remove the top layer of your skin as waxing can. It’s also easy to wash off, giving it an advantage over traditional waxing.

This is still an uncomfortable method of hair removal, but it gives you the same long-lasting results as waxing.

Laser Hair Treatment

Laser hair removal is the most expensive (and most effective) hair removal method.

You can get a handheld laser hair removal device for a more affordable option. While there’s a somewhat large upfront cost, it’s more affordable than going to laser hair removal appointments and you can do it from the comfort of your own home.

It takes several sessions to start seeing good results, and you have to make sure that you don’t wax or shave while you’re waiting.

You can also get professional laser hair removal. To completely prevent hair from growing again, the follicle needs to b destroyed. This isn’t likely, but it is possible with professional laser hair removal.

Laser hair treatment can reduce the appearance of hair even if it continues to grow.
